One Shot sample length???

Is there an ideal length for one shot samples? When I bring in sample such as a snare, is sounds out of tune, a little off and even cut short most of the time? Like there's no decay. I tried extending the length of some samples, just adding silence to the end. Still I cant quite get most of my sample to sound like they really do?

It's almost like the attack is way off into the sample. If I increase the sample length and the decay in Vortex, so it retriggers before the sequence ends, you can hear the beginning of the sample much better.

Frustrating! I really want to use this thing, but right now it's a struggle.

Hi Juan,

I'm not sure I understand your problems exactly.

First off, which version of Vortex are you using? V 1.1?

Mac OSX 10.6.2, KORE 2.10, REAKTOR 5.15.002, SAFARI 4.04, CRHOME 4.0.249.30, FIREFOX 3.6

Any ideas on how to fix it? Vortex is awesome, but I cant use it if it's going to alter my samples as much as it does. It's like it's taking the snap, or punch out of my samples.

Also any tips on loading samples, i.e length BPM etc would be great. I would typically use Vortex as a plug in Ableton, and if need be alter my samples in Ableton and export them to use in Vortex.

I have all weekend to work with it and learn it, so thanks for quick responses.

Hi Juan,

1 - Try to experiment with turning off BPM and FIT buttons, to try to get your close to the original if thats what you're after.

2 - Sample length should be in 4/8/16/32 bar phrases for proper detection. If mis-detected you can use the factor button (next to the bpm button).

I have tried all of that. It still cuts off the front of the sample if the sample hit is at the very beginning. Like there is a quick attack on the front end of the sample. This takes the snappyness out of kicks and snares.

For the most part I "am after" what Vortex does, but when I do want a straight up kick or snare, I would like to add that and it sound as expected. This is such a cool tool, but adding a bit of blank space and re-rendering all of my intended samples does not sound like a work around that I would be willing to do, but it sort of works that way. I could sit here and trial and error pinpoint what the perfect amount of blank space needs to be on one shot samples such as snares and kicks, when the start knob is at zero, then re-render all samples that I want to use for Vortex using that amount of blank on the front end. However that approach seems exhausting. It would be nice to know how to change the "attack" on the samples, unless it would be possible to set a negative amount on the start position, where zero truly played the beginning of the sample?

Hi Juan,

Can you send me an email that has your ensemble with just an example of the troublesome sample? In other words, delete all the samples from the map except for the one causing problems, zip the ensemble and email to me.

I'd love to get to the bottom of this.

As for having Vortex serve up a 'perfectly straight' version of a sample, I think we'd have to add an additional sample engine to handle those duties, with perhaps a toggle of some sort.

Perhaps we will do this in the future or provide a similar alternative. Use the email info @ (thenameofoursite.com)

As far as samples completely retaining their original sound, would be nice, but not necessary. However having one shots play without getting the front end cut off is something I have to have for me to be able to use Vortex as my number one beat machine.

juansolo,

I noticed this "long attack" issue in the previous version of Vortex. It was fixed somewhat in version 1.1 but I agree that it's not perfect. Even with bpm and fit turned off, the attack on one shots still sounds filtered.

I noticed that if you adjust the bpm of your host (if you use reaktor in a daw), it can bring back more of the attack in your sample...even changing the bpm from 120 to 121 can help, as an example. I don't feel like this is a solution, though.

I think it might help to glue some of your oneshots together into a 1 or 2 bar loop, and save that in a wav file. Then throw that into vortex and select between them with the start knob. play with the bpm and fit buttons once again.

I hear you both. We can't promise just yet, but we hope to include a high quality sampler option in a future version not meant for granular duties.
